Domestic Violence and Executive Dysfunction
Executive function has big implications for the design of domestic violence programs. It is important to know the subtypes of batterers because different subtypes have different needs for treatment, and different levels of intervention that are necessary to ensure safety. I'll refer to some very recent studies that address domestic violence and executive function problems.
Domestic Violence: Call for Primary Care Screening and Gender Issues – Part I
In this article, and some to follow, I will provide a glimpse into controversies and progress in the field of domestic violence (DV). Issues of mental illness, cognitive disabilities, personality disorders, unemployment, poverty, gender, politics, the legal system, and education loom large in DV, calling for a biopsychosocial perspective. What better place than Brain Blogger for a look at the subject? Because it is such a tremendously large and complicated topic, I will write about it through different lenses.
Unhinging from Theory: Autism and Opinions
Sometimes, disconnecting our theories from our healing practices and clinical understanding can be a good thing to do. When Bruno Bettelheim convinced many psychotherapists and psychological theoreticians that autism was caused by bad parenting in the form of "refrigerator mothers," he was stuck on a theory. He was proven wrong, but it took some time for these clinicians to let go of their theory and see that the cause of autism was not known. For that duration, we can thank Bettelheim for causing an extraordinary amount of suffering because of his unscientific, though well-meaning, thinking. Countless mothers were blamed for their children's autism. What a thing to live with!
Post Hypnosis Society
To all members of developed nations: Now that you are realizing that corporations are not citizens, but are sociopaths, your hypnosis that our society is designed to help you have a good life is eeking away.As a counselor I have seen mid-level executives realize that they allowed themselves to be set up and bowled over by corporate downsizing. Their question: "What is all my corporate experience good for? I invested in a sort of 'business model' called being a good employee and now have no future resembling what I was expecting." They are living in a "harvest and discard" world, where people are harvested and discarded. And there were still more people experiencing this through outsourcing and corporate flight into other lands. There was no fealty to the citizens that birthed and maintained these corporations; the numbers spoke louder than the employees.
