Thanks for commenting. As I corrected on my Facebook post a few day ago, I should have typed ‘over many months’ instead of ‘over many years’ while posting. Indeed, Elizabeth was abducted for nine months.

I hold this story close to my heart. I couldn’t help but cry when I read about these women and the young girl being held captive. I am a survivor of child abuse so when I see other survivors on the news it pinches a nerve. I was sad to see how many people immediately questioned the girls and their involvement with the crime. There were a lot of comments in the media like “how did they not figure out how to escape sooner?” This mindset contributes to negative rape culture and shadows the truly important lessons of horrors like this. Thanks for posting this article.

I was interested in the article until you wrote “Elizabeth Smart, herself tormented sexually by her captor over many years” She was only held for nine months. It makes your credibility suffer.
