Some I was not aware of. I agree with Leslie on the need for transparency and how it relates to pricing. The relationships between physicians and drug companies is only one small - relatively minute - part of the cost of developing drugs. I would like to see more awareness of the price tag on each regulation on the industry, in both time and money. Those are much bigger drivers of the cost of prescription drugs, and they are also a cost to patients who have no treatment because it is taking and longer and longer to develop. Some regulation is needed, and so is transparency on both sides, but when it comes as a response to an outcry over a particular issue and not part of a sensible, strategic plan, we get selective accountability. That can do more harm than good, because it deflects focus from more important issues.-Author of The Neurology of Angels: A novel about the hearts inside the business and politics of drug development

I support transparency and accountability, but selective transparency is dangerous. The variation in prices of the SAME generic medication is astounding (please see generic Zofran: $60 at Costco, $650 at Walgreens). Prices of testing is similarly variable (please see MRI, noncontrast, of the brain- $350 at one facility, $3500 at another). As more and more Americans join the ranks of the uninsured, we must demand transparency in health care pricing. As I have seen time and again in my primary care medicine practice, when people think they can't afford medicine or treatment, people suffer. Sometimes they die. Is this what we want for our family and friends and neighbors? For ourselves?Leslie Ramirez, MD

As reported in the Chicago Tribune, ABC/Channel 7 news affiliate and WGN this month, prescription drug price transparency is already alive and well on the web.

At http://www.LesliesList.org, we have posted the price for self-pay patients, of over 400 medications at all of the major pharmacy outlets in Chicago.
