My feeling why memantine works is due to where the drug targets in the brain. Though the Alzheimer's and BED are entirely different, it looks like memantine can help by blocking the NMDA glutamate receptors. With BED, this might be helpful in controlling the hormone leptin signaling.

Interesting study, though definitely needs to be on a larger scale. I wonder how it works (if it does?) I'd have thought that any appetite suppressant would be effective in B.E.D - does memantine suppress appetite? It's a D2 agonist, amongst other things, so it might do.Also, I know that antidepressants reduce binge eating in bulemia, and memantine has been trialled as an antidepressant (<a href="http://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/163/1/153" rel="nofollow">although it doesn't seem to work very well.)</a>

Hmm – that’s interesting.
