Many times, these characters also have a mental illness. Violence is one common stereotype of psychological disorders, along with rebellion and child-like behavior. In The Dark Knightand Me, Myself, and Irene, a character has multiple personality disorder, which is said to cause demonic or mean behavior. Harvey Dent develops a second, evil personality called Two-Face, while Charley Baileygates is known to lash out at random due to his other, less friendly, personality. In each character, mental illness is shown to bring out violence, instead of many other possible behaviors. As such, these movies add to the stigma that surrounds mental disorders. It is definitely true that the great majority of our citizens lack factual information regarding mental illness. Discussing illness to most people is a downer. Isn't the real problem- not enough individuals are effected with mental illness? It's easier for society to ignore the problem than really attack the illness head on. Better to isolate those afflicted, pretend they are not really sick...perhaps, those individuals are just weak? If society in general REALLY cared, would Health insurance exist with no mental illness benefits? Would politicians be fighting in Washington for the legal right to sell discriminatory second-rate insurance coverage in every state to avoid state mandates that require mental illness coverages? What really matters? Sell more policies that cover less conditions at a lower price to generate MORE profits? I'm still waiting for an article that suggests we outsource Mental illness patients to India to lower medical costs !I'm convinced that the reason Cancer & Heart patients get substantial health care in the USA is because the number of people afflicted is so large; politically these people can not be ignored! Can the mentally ill be ignored politically? Hell- Yes! As far as I am concerned, Stigma concerning mental illness will only lessen when MORE people are outraged regarding mental health insurance coverage & demand equality in coverages !Want to reduce stigma? Get the mentally ill the mental health care they need & deserve. Provide them more than 2nd rate health insurance..

Excellent article !
It is definitely true that the great majority of our citizens lack factual information regarding mental illness.
